How to use this tool

The tool works in several ways, using Filters, map pins and a table.

Filter boxes can be applied singly or multiply to narrow results.

  • Field of Research / Clinical Condition : This is a drop-down of medical specialty group such as Diabetes, Cancer, Dermatology, Mental Health.

  • Study Status : This narrows to show the recruitment status of the project. Usually these will be:

    • Open (recruiting to new participants)

    • In set-up (the site is preparing to open to participants by gaining permissions with the NHS Organisation hosting the team.)

    • Suspended (the site has paused recruitment for unknown reasons; possibly to re-design how the study works.)

  • CPMS ID : The Central Portfolio Management System Identification number (from the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network System.) If you use the CPMS ID, it is suggested that you use no other filters.

  • Name of Study : This can be free text keyword searched, or the exact "Short" study title added if known.

  • Organisation : This is the name of the site where the research is being delivered and can be free text keyword searched, or the exact site name (e.g., Hospital / Surgery name.) Not all surgeries are research active. Ask at yours to find out if they are involved in NIHR research.

  • Enter First part of Postcode only : If you enter your home postcode, you are not likely to find any research, unless you live next to a surgery or hospital.

  • Enter Keyword : This can be free text keyword searched, and combines other fields (Study Name and Field of Research.)

Pins can narrow results by location.

  • Locate the Field of Research / Clinical Condition. This is a drop-down of medical specialty group such as Diabetes, Cancer, Dermatology, Mental Health.

  • Pins are colour-coded by number of sites included in the pin: Red target circles are large concentrations, yellow are medium and blue low. Clicking a density pin zooms in and narrows results to show the total at a site.

  • Infobox: When a site is zoomed in to its lowest limit, an infobox will appear

    • Open (recruiting to new participants)

    • In set-up (the site is preparing to open to participants by gaining permissions with the NHS Organisation hosting the team.)

    • Suspended (the site has paused recruitment for unknown reasons; possibly to re-design how the study works.)

    • (Once status has changed to "Closed," studies are no longer included, as this is an active map.)

Table

  • Use the filters to narrow your search into a list.

  • The study data list can also be downloaded using the 3-dot button in the upper right corner of the filter/map area.
